The UFC Interim Lightweight Title Dilemma

The UFC Interim Lightweight Title Dilemma

Dana White, the president of the UFC, has made it clear that he has no interest in creating an interim lightweight title. This decision comes as Islam Makhachev, the current lightweight champion, is sidelined with a ligament injury in his hand. Despite this setback, Makhachev most recently defended his title with a late submission victory over Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 in June.

Arman Tsarukyan, the No. 1 contender in the lightweight division, was hoping to challenge Makhachev on October 26 at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi. However, it seems that Tsarukyan will have to wait a few more months before getting his shot at the title. While he is willing to take another fight in the meantime, White has firmly shut down the idea of an interim title bout.

In an interview, White stated, “Islam’s fought so many times and is always willing to jump up and take a fight. So, no, there won’t be an interim title.” He expressed confidence that when Makhachev is ready to return, the UFC has plans in place. Tsarukyan has mentioned that he is hearing rumors of a rematch with Makhachev happening early next year, potentially ruling out the possibility of a fight on December 7 at UFC 310.

Tsarukyan solidified his position as the top contender by defeating Charles Oliveira at UFC 300. In his UFC debut in April 2019, Tsarukyan faced Makhachev and lost a close unanimous decision. Since then, he has displayed impressive performances, accumulating a record of 9-1 and currently riding a four-fight winning streak.

The UFC lightweight division finds itself in a state of uncertainty with the absence of Makhachev and the reluctance to introduce an interim title. Fighters like Tsarukyan are left in limbo, as they wait for their chance to compete for the coveted belt. Despite the setbacks, the division remains one of the most competitive in the organization, promising thrilling matchups and exciting rivalries in the future.
