Malcolm Wellmaker: From Local Hero to UFC Star

Malcolm Wellmaker’s path to success in the UFC was far from easy. Hailing from a small team at Faglier’s MMA in Augusta, Ga., Wellmaker is not the typical product of a major gym or a lineage of prominent MMA fighters. Despite the odds stacked against him, Wellmaker made a statement with a first-round knockout at Dana White’s Contender Series 69, earning himself a UFC contract. His impressive finish even landed at No. 7 on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” Top 10 plays, bringing national attention to his region and community.

Upon his return home from Las Vegas, Wellmaker was greeted with overwhelming support and appreciation from his community. From a surprise celebration at the airport to throwing the first pitch at his local baseball stadium, Wellmaker’s accomplishments were celebrated with pride. Even during a trip to Walgreens, he was recognized and offered a significant discount as a gesture of support and admiration. Despite the sudden influx of attention, Wellmaker remained grounded and focused on his training just two days after his victory.

A Positive Example and Inspiration

Wellmaker’s success serves as an inspiration to aspiring fighters in his area who share the same ambitions. As the first athlete from his team to make it to the UFC, Wellmaker is determined to pave the way for others to follow. Despite being told by many that it couldn’t be done, Wellmaker’s journey to the UFC proves that with dedication and loyalty to his team, anything is possible. He sees his accomplishment as a demonstration of love and loyalty to his gym, where he learned to throw his first punch years ago.

Now officially part of the UFC roster, Wellmaker is focused on making a mark in the bantamweight division. At 30 years old, he may be considered on the older end of talent that Dana White looks to sign, but his impressive record and knockout victory made him an undeniable choice. Wellmaker acknowledges the depth of talent in the bantamweight division and is excited about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. He is eager to face top competitors and is prepared to make his octagon debut by the end of the year.

While Wellmaker awaits his first official UFC assignment, he has his sights set on a few bucket list items. One of his dreams is to have Joe Rogan commentate during one of his fights, following the experience of having Daniel Cormier on commentary for one of his previous bouts. Wellmaker is ready to take on any opponent selected by matchmaker Sean Shelby and his manager, Jason House of Iridium Sports Agency, and is determined to continue his journey towards becoming a household name in the UFC.
