Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has expressed serious concerns about Mike Tyson’s decision to step back into the ring at the age of 58. Tyson, who has a professional record of 50-6-2, is set to face off against Jake Paul on November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. This fight was originally scheduled to take place in July but was postponed due to Tyson’s health issues. Hearn, however, questions the wisdom of allowing Tyson to compete again after almost 20 years since his last official fight.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Hearn did not mince words when expressing his opinion about Tyson’s comeback. He stated, “What, what, what on earth are we doing? I’m lucky enough to have a business where we don’t need to do that, and I will never do that.” Despite being involved in promoting fights involving popular YouTuber boxers like Logan Paul and KSI, Hearn draws a clear line when it comes to allowing a boxing legend like Tyson to face a young and active fighter.
Hearn’s criticism stems from his belief that Tyson should not be risking his health and well-being by stepping back into the ring at this stage in his life. He expressed concern for Tyson’s best interests, stating, “Anyone who thinks (Tyson) should be in the ring right now either doesn’t have his best interests at heart or is an idiot.” Hearn also pointed out that Tyson’s last official fight was two decades ago and that he was already “shot to pieces” at that time.
The promoter raised doubts about Tyson’s ability to compete at a high level after such a long absence from professional boxing. He questioned the logic behind Tyson’s decision to return, especially against an opponent like Jake Paul, who is significantly younger, active, and capable of delivering powerful punches. Hearn emphasized that even though Paul may not be a seasoned professional boxer, his dedication to training and physical abilities should not be underestimated.
